Although banned in the US and many countries around the world, the blood sport known as “sabong” is popular in the Philippines. There are illegal and legal struggles.

In sabong fights, spectators place the wagons on the ground while the birds are beaten to death with hooks, known as “gaffs” or “knives” in English, attached to their claws. Birds are often injected with steroids to increase their fighting potential.
But Philippine lawmakers want the soap to stick to the digital age. As internet broadcasting (e-sabong) for contentious disputes is already common, the new measure seeks to create transparency around taxation.
“As the government looks for new sources of revenue to fund its COVID-19 priorities, this bill responds to that government’s need by introducing new state taxes on businesses that already exist, and will continue to do so as digital technology advances. such taxes are levied,” said House Ways and Means Committee Chairman and bill sponsor Joey Salceda.
According to the Sports and Entertainment Council of the Philippines, the cockfighting industry in the Philippines generates just over $1 billion a year. Meanwhile, e-sabong has been around for almost a decade, but has gained popularity due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of the government’s measures to combat the spread of the virus, live streaming has been banned as a sport.
This means that the Slasher Cup 2020 World Championship has also been cancelled. Dubbed the Sky Battle Olympics, this event is usually held every year at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Salceda admits that the e-sabong dispute law, which he wants to change, is in a gray area. It wants to levy a 5 percent tax on gross revenue from off-site bets on locally licensed games.
The measure also allows the Internal Revenue Service to track and audit bags and other gambling used for tax purposes. At the same time, local government units retain full authority to levy special taxes and fees.

“The principle is simple. Earlier, the industry was in a gray area. Now we can shed some light on this. Not used in industry before. Now we pay taxes. “As a non-core economic activity, this proposal will be one of the rare opportunities to create a painless revenue stream for our economic recovery.”
