Casino Theatre Aluva – Movie theaters in several parts of the country opened on Thursday after seven months, with some moviegoers cautiously watching movies in the COVID-19 “contactless” era of alternate seating, 50% capacity and packaged snacks.

While theaters and multiplexes remain closed in states such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Chhattisgarh, they have opened in several places, including Delhi and those in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Some areas, and strictly abide by the precautions of the new normal.

Noting that they were the first sector to close and one of the last to open as India “unblocked”, theater bodies are optimistic about the first steps towards normality.

But it was a quiet reopening, with only a handful of people overcoming their COVID fears trickling in to watch mixed regional and Hindi reruns, e.g.

PVR, India’s largest cinema exhibitor with 845 screens in 176 properties across 71 cities, said 10 states and four union territories had approved screenings. From this, the PVR starts operating in 487 screens.

While they will resume commercial showings on Friday, the industry’s other big names, Cinepolis and INOX, are showing films starting Thursday, with a focus on safety measures, including strict sanitization and social distancing.

Sanjeev Bijli, joint managing director of PVR Ltd, said the next two weeks will be a trial run for cinema chains, but cinema business will bounce back.

In the capital, most movie theaters remain closed, with some reopening attracting small crowds. Some of them held special screenings for COVID-19 warriors or staff and their families.

Standard operating procedures mandated by the federal government include one seat distance in the hall, wearing face masks at all times, proper ventilation and setting air-conditioning temperatures above 23 degrees Celsius.

In addition to mandatory temperature checks, face masks and touch-free hand sanitizers, multiplexes have gone digital, with e-tickets replacing traditional paper tickets, self-check-in using QR codes, shared auditorium seating charts and seating locations, and online ordering of food and drinks.

While the Home Office has given the go-ahead for cinemas and theaters to resume under Unlock 5.0, it has left it to the states to make the final call.

It will take a while for new content to return to theaters as producers delay major Bollywood releases due to their reluctance to release new films.

SVF Cinemas, which has 13 theaters in Kolkata, will open its doors from Friday with all standard protocols, a spokesman said.

In Pondicherry, only one theater is showing, while a shopping mall in the city will resume showings at two of its theaters on Friday. Lack of new releases and closure of halls in neighboring Tamil Nadu is also a reason.

In Andhra Pradesh, theaters remained closed on Friday despite film exhibitors approving government screenings, citing various constraints, mainly high maintenance costs.

There are approximately 8,750 screens in India. Among them, 3,100 are multi-screen theaters, and 5,650 are single-screen theaters, mainly operating in second- and third-tier cities and below.

Several states including Delhi, Kerala and Maharashtra have directed cinemas to close from March 11-16 to March 31, 2020.
