The Empire was originally built in 1884 as a variety theater and remodeled for movies in the 1920s. It is one of several cinemas in and around Leicester Square that are regularly used for film premieres and debut screenings.
The Empire Theater began on 17 April 1884 as a ballet venue with a capacity of around 2,000 seats next door to the West de Variety Theater in Leicester Square, owned by Daniel Nicholls.
The first performance was Chilperic, with music by Hervey, composed by H. Hersey and H.B. Farney and described as a grand musical extravaganza in three acts and seven tablets. The corps de ballet was 50 strong for the performance.
Edward Solomon and Sidney Grundy moved here for the premiere of their comic opera, Pocahontas or the Great White Pearl, another Solomon opera, Polly or Pet of the Regiment, and their Billy Taylor revival, all in 1884. In 1887, the theater opened as a variety of the Empire Theater renamed as a popular music hall. From 1887 to 1915, designer C. Wilhelm designed (and sometimes created) both scenery and costumes for many ballets at the theater, which set the fashion for stage design and were much imitated.
George Edwards managed the theater in the early 20th century. Dancer Adeline Gee and the theatre’s ballet company, working under the direction of composer-director Leopold Weisel, did much to revive the art of ballet, which had declined in the 19th century in Britain.
An extension providing secondary access from Leicester Street via a new foyer was added in 1893 with architect Frank Verity.
In March 1896, the Empire Theater hosted the first commercial theatrical screening of the film projected by Auguste and Louis Lumiere for a UK audience.
